I see so many post that say you can't spread unless you have an active outbreak but yet I read on the internet saying it still can be passed even if you don't have a outbreak. I'm so confused because its the people that actually have it that says they haven't passed it when they don't have a outbreak ..So confused....
Shedding. Orally hsv1 usually only sheds when one has an out break. It’s not 100%, but it’s seldom sheds when there isn’t an out break. Genital herpes type 2 can shed anytime. Outbreak or no out break. Also about 70% of the people with herpes have no or very few symptoms. Many don’t even know they have it. That is one reason it get spread so much. Having type 2 orally is less common, because in general it doesn’t like the mouth.type 2 in the mouth actually doesn’t shed that much, but it can with and without symptoms. Type 1 is becoming more common gentially. I am not sure how often genital it sheds.
So if you can pass on herpes without an outbreak then it stands to reason that the same would apply to HSV1 where everyone with a cold sore would pass it on to another with a simple kiss ........yet that is not happening ......can anyone explain this discrepancy because it doesn't make sense to me ...........and I have never met or heard of anyone including myself ever passing it on without an outbreak.
You can pass it. There are periods during the year known as shedding and that goes on for about 11 days. It’s when skin cells shed off and can be passed that way too but there are usually no visible signs it’s happening. When you’re actively breaking out you can spread it so it’s best to abstain. Hope that helps.
